Frequently Asked Questions

Permanent Makeup & Cosmetic Tattooing

What does PMU stand for?

PMU is the acronym for Permanent Make Up

How long will cosmetic tattoos last?

Permanent make up normally lasts between 12 to 24 months, but varies from person to person due to skin type, genetics, lifestyle, diet and other environmental factors. After this period my clients are advised to return for a colour-boost treatment to ensure the permanent make up remains fresh.

Does permanent make up hurt?

Some people may experience discomfort during the treatment, that’s why a numbing cream is applied to the treated area. During the cosmetic procedure more anaesthetic is applied to reduce discomfort to a minimum.

Will my permanent make up be really dark?

Colour intensity is going to be sharper and darker immediately after the pmu procedure. This is perfectly natural and it will fade as the tissue heals.

Is permanent make up safe?

Yes, all iColor pigments are made of high quality pure and natural raw materials. High quality pigments produced meet the requirements for safety of RESAP and CPR.

How long will take permanent make up to heal?

While it typically heals in 7 to 10 days, please allow up to 4 weeks for it to mature to reach the final healed colour. Initially the colour will be darker, and during the healing process it will flake, peel and you may experience dryness, itchiness, redness, even tenderness or swelling. These are all normal after cosmetic tattoing, so do not pick, peel or scratch the treated area or the colour may heal unevenly and you risk scarring and infection. Please allow the wound to flake on its own to achieve its intended affects. On the first day an ice pack with cloth can be applied as required to help reduce swelling. I supply an aftercare leaflet and cream with vitamin D to help the natural healing process.

When will I see the final colour of permanent make up?

The true colour will be seen about one month after each treatment and pigment may vary in colour according to skin tone, type and condition, age and medication used. Some skin are more susceptible to accept pigments than others.

Can I have lip tattoo or lip permanent make up if I suffer from cold sores?

Permanent make up does not cause cold sores. Historical cold sores mean your body carries the virus. The procedure may awaken this virus laying dormant. You must contact your doctor to obtain and take the proper prescription medication to prevent such outbreaks for at least 4 days before and after the treatment. Follow your doctor’s instructions in this regards.

What if I have a cold sore on the day of the permanent make up treatment?

When having an active cold sore a lip procedure cannot be carried out. It is then recommended to delay your pmu treatment by at least 14 days or until it is completely healed.

Can I still have permanent make up treatment if I have collagen lip fillers or botox injections?

I recommend you to wait at least 6 weeks to ensure it is fully healed. Ideally it would be best to have your permanent make up treatment done first. The reason being is that when the botox/fillers wear off you are left with brows or lips that are incorrectly placed or eyeliner that drops. This is only manageable while keep having botox or filler top-ups, but when you stop topping up it can become a problematic. I recommend to have cosmetic tattoos done first and at least 6 weeks after the botox or lip fillers.

Can I have eyelash extensions on my permanent make up eyeliner treatment?

Lash extensions must be removed completely before eyeliner tattooing as they pose danger to your eyes during procedure.

Can I have treatment if pregnant or breast-feeding?

Unfortunately I am unable to tattoo on anyone who is pregnant or breast-feeding, also in case of becoming pregnant between sessions I will not be able to complete the next treatment.

How long does cosmetic tattooing take?

Please allow 2 to 3 hours for your first treatment to allow enough time to ensure you are happy with the desired shape and colour. Touch up visits are focused on perfecting the healed results and please allow approximately one hour for this.
